As we enjoy this season of thanks, let’s take some time to give thanks to God during each of the days leading up to the holiday and, of course, on that day. Welcome to Day 3:
“Give thanks to the LORD, call upon His name, make known His deeds among the peoples, proclaim that His name is exalted.” Psalm 12:4
Recently, I found an old journal of mine. It was one I kept while I did my student teaching in the Dominican Republic.
That 3 months or so I spend there was my very first time out of the country and I went totally alone. Before then, the furthest I’d ventured was to college, which was only an hour’s drive from home. It didn’t take long for me to feel the effects of homesickness.
It was hard being so far from home and those I loved, and there were times I gave into those feelings, but I wanted to focus on the good. So, I began to make a record of all of the little blessings God was giving me while I was there. As I did, it helped to shift my focus to the things for which I had to be thankful.
Why not do that today? Keep a piece of paper handy, or keep notes on your phone. Make it a simple list or get as creative if you want. Make a collage of words in festive colors, draw the items or simply write them. Do it on your own or invite your whole family to participate.
However you choose to do it, simply jot down the things you have to be thankful for as you go about your day and take time to thank God for those things.
At the end of the day, you will have a wonderful, tangible reminder of all God has done for you.. I am so glad I did that while I was out of the country and I will be equally glad to look at a reminder of all of God’s blessings from this day.
Oh Lord, You give me so much. You do so much for me. Look at this incredible display of Your blessings in my life from just this one day. I thank you for each and every one of them. Lord, help me to keep these things in mind as I go my way. Help me to “count my blessings” and lift my voice in thanksgiving to You for each and every one of them. Amen.
